BLITHE BOOK CLUB

May 17th Friday 6:30-7:30pm, free with Rachel Belward

Every couple of months we'll be hosting a free book club. If you've ever had the goal to read more, wanted to explore and discus books in a kind and judgement free environment...this is it!

Hosted by the wonderful Rachel who is not just an avid reader, but a long time member of Blithe Yoga.

We're going to kick off with The Yoga Manifesto by Nadia Gilani.

Grab a copy of the book and we'll see you there.

"How did an ancient spiritual practice become the preserve of the privileged?

Nadia Gilani has been practising yoga for twenty-five years. She has also worked as a yoga teacher. Yoga has saved her life and seen her through many highs and lows; it has been a faith, a discipline, and a friend, and she believes wholeheartedly in its radical potential. However, over her years in the wellness industry, Nadia has noticed not only yoga's rising popularity, but also how its modern incarnation no longer serves people of colour, working class people, or many other groups who originally pioneered its creation.

Combining her own memories of how the practice has helped her with an account of its history and transformation in the modern west, Nadia creates a love letter to yoga and a passionate critique of the billion-dollar industry whose cost and inaccessibility has shut out many of those it should be helping. By turns poignant, funny, and shocking, The Yoga Manifesto excavates where the industry has gone wrong, and what can be done to save the practice from its own success."

COMMUNITY GRIEF WORKSHOP

Next session TBC - with Jasmin Khan

Our current social and political challenges are causing grief and vicarious trauma for many. You might feel heartbroken, hopeless and exhausted. These bewildering times can also amplify grief that has already been ongoing for you, such as ancestral grief and displacement, you may have lost a person through bereavement or the end of a relationship, had a miscarriage, are experiencing ecological grief, feel regrets, or mourn unfulfilled hopes. All types of grief are welcome in this free workshop.

The intention of this workshop is to remember our capacity to be with grief, and to experience the transformative power of tending to grief. In community we can cultivate a safe space to open up to grief, to talk about our losses and to find companionship in navigating the often overwhelming and unfamiliar journey of adapting life to loss.

This is a free workshop that focuses on sharing in community, though you can share as much or as little as you like. We intend to regulate our nervous system and find home and belonging in our body, history and community. There will be little movement involved, so you don’t need a change of clothing.

The workshop will inculde:

  • sharing circle

  • meditation

  • altar making

  • grief ritual

  • learning tools to manage grief

  • learning therapeutic theory about grief

  • calming the nervous system

This workshop will be led by Jasmin Khan. Jasmin is a honorary bereavement counsellor at the St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney and a Trainee Psychotherapist, specialising in grief, culture, neurodiversity and body-mind connection. She also trained as a yoga teacher, Pause Place Practitioner and in mindfulness. Jasmin has lived and worked across Europe, the UK, the US, the Middle East and Asia, and her non-linear background is reflected in her practice working with a wide range of people and groups.

There is an opportunity to journal and write down thoughts in this workshop, so please bring a pen and something to write these down. Attendees are also welcome to bring a small token or gift to represent their feelings and grief.
